A deep red claret colour with a nose of blackberries and black currant with hints of brambles and pepper. A very pretty and approachable wine with a soft palate with red fruit and flowers.
An excellent match with your Christmas turkey and cranberry sauce and a great BBQ wine along with almost anything grilled - sausages, mushrooms, or lamb loin chops. Light enough to be drunk as an accompaniment to salmon or sardines but dark enough to also compliment white meats like chicken and pork. Drink at room temperature or lightly chilled on a hot day as an accompaniment to a family BBQ.
Vintage 2017 had the wettest Spring we have ever experienced. 500mm of rain in the months of June, July and August were followed by a record 255mm in September - the month we would usually see things starting to dry out. Our vines burst and as things warmed up the incessant rain led to several Downy Mildew primary events which meant we needed to spray. The ground was far too wet for a tractor so we put our first two sprays on using a helicopter (which took about 15 minutes compared to my seven odd hours in the tractor!) The growing season continued to be wetter than usual and disease pressure was high. Thankfully February and March saw much drier and warmer weather which helped ripen our fruit and kill off any remaining oil spots. We hand picked about a tonne and a half on the 7th April.
The grapes were hand picked then destemmed and sorted prior to fermentation in an open fermenter. The wine was pressed when dry and allowed to undergo MLF before being matured in old French oak for 6 months prior to bottling. The wine has been made with minimal intervention and is unfined and unfiltered.
